SPU participates in national First Generation College Student Celebration

西雅图 Pacific University is joining the national recognition of first-generation college students with a campuswide celebration and reception on Friday, November 8, 9 a.m.–1 p.m. More than a third of SPU’s students are first-generation, meaning they will be  the first in their family to graduate with a bachelor’s degree.

的 reception will feature food and beverages, first-generation swag, 一个抽奖活动, 照相亭, and a wall with words of encouragement from first-generation SPU faculty and staff. Other departments across campus will participate in the celebration by hosting drop-in activities.

“西雅图 Pacific University is proud to be an institution that provides excellent educational opportunities and support for first-generation students,” says SPU President Dan Martin. “We are excited to celebrate the immense contributions that first-generation college students have made, and continue to make, in the SPU community.”

First-Generation College Celebration, now in its third year, encourages institutions across the nation to celebrate the identity and successes of first-generation students and graduates. November 8 is also the anniversary of the Higher Education Act, signed into law in 1965 by President Lyndon Johnson to increase accessibility to higher education.
