SPU Joins Other Universities to 支持 经济适用房周, May 14-18

的 presidents of four 西雅图-area universities and colleges have joined forces to declare May 14-18, 2018 as 经济适用房周 on their campuses. Dr. 杰夫Wagnitz, interim president of Highline College; Dr. 丹尼尔·J. 马丁, president of 网易彩票下载; Steven V. Sundborg,年代.J., president 西雅图大学; and Dr. 安娜·玛丽·考斯, president of University of Washington, have signed proclamations or otherwise affirmed the importance of safe, 健康的, affordable homes in communities of opportunity. 的 higher-education institutions join King County and 20 King County cities, 包括西雅图, in recognizing the benefits of affordable housing to everyone in the community.

经济适用房周, now in its third year, is hosted by the 房屋发展协会 西雅图-金县. This is the first time all four universities have participated; 西雅图 University was the first university to sign on, 在成立的第一年, with 网易彩票下载 joining last year. 的 西雅图 City Council and Mayor Jenny Durkan have signed this year’s proclamation, and King County is expected to sign at its meeting 今天.

总统Sundborg, 西雅图大学, notes that affordable housing is a major issue for universities in a booming region with ever-increasing housing costs. “在西雅图这样一个物价昂贵的城市, access to affordable housing is an issue not only for students, 对教职员工也是一样,他说. “We are pleased to be joined again by 网易彩票下载, and to welcome Highline College and University of Washington, to this important advocacy effort on behalf of our campus communities.” 的 private Jesuit university on Capitol Hill 今年秋天将开放希尔伯特音乐厅, a new 10-story student residence hall and office building at the northeast corner of campus that will offer housing for 303 students.

University of Washington President 安娜·玛丽·考斯 affirmed the commitment of our state’s largest university. “在经济适用房周期间, we recommit to ensuring that our community thrives with opportunity, and that all people in it live with dignity in safe, 健康和负担得起的住房,” Dr. 河床说.

全国范围内,估计 11% - 19% of students at four-year colleges are housing insecure. Almost half of all community college students face housing insecurity each year, with 13 to 14 percent experiencing homelessness. 的 housing shortage affects students 县-wide, 不仅在西雅图, says Highline College Interim President Dr. 杰夫Wagnitz.

“的 impacts of housing insecurity are, 如果有什么区别的话, more pronounced in regions like South King County,博士说。. Wagnitz.  “为了高线学院, it’s imperative that we advocate for affordable housing solutions, both for our students and for our neighbors.”

Universities can serve a unique role in addressing our region’s housing needs.  “Living in 西雅图 今天 and hosting Tent City 3 on our campus last winter emphasized the critical state of the challenges facing homelessness and affordable housing,” says 网易彩票下载 President 丹尼尔·J. 马丁. “We must heighten our commitment so that all in our community can flourish, and we are committed to working with the city, 县, and our fellow universities in moving forward on workable solutions through advocacy and service.”

正如马丁校长指出的那样, Tent City 3 is one example of how 西雅图-area universities have long worked to engage their campus communities in addressing the region’s homelessness state of emergency. All three universities have hosted tent cities on campus.  西雅图 University was the first university in the nation to host a tent city on campus in 2005, and 网易彩票下载 has hosted Tent City 3 three times at its campus on the north slope of Queen Anne Hill. 的 University of Washington hosted Tent City 3 in winter 2016-17. 的 高等教育编年史, the leading publication for higher-education institutions, recently published SPU教授的专栏文章 about how the experience of hosting Tent City 3 changed their campus.

To recognize 经济适用房周, 西雅图 University’s 无家可归家庭项目 will host the screening of “Central Division,” a student-produced documentary on gentrification of 西雅图’s Central District, 周二, 5月15日, 7-9 p.m. A panel of community leaders and the audience will respond to the issues raised in the documentary. 这个活动是免费的 鼓励报名.
